Going to Breakfast
The Fairmont was right across from a grocery store, so we went there to get some breakfast. We got so many things, and it was like a Whole Foods but way better. When we got back to the hotel we put everything away. We were going to meet up with our friend Alex, so when we were done with breakfast we went to where he worked.
The Science Museum
We had planned to go to the The Field museum for our first stop, but our friend Alex said that the Museum of Science should be our top priority. Following his advice, we took an Uber to the Science Museum.
We had a City Pass that gave us a pass to a few museums, and this was one of them. There were some extra things that you could do inside, like this science movie thing or the Submarine Tour. We looked through all the things and chose two. The Lego Exhibit, and the Submarine Tour. We had a little time before the submarine tuor so we looked around. We stayed at the weather place for a while looking around, and it was so cool. There was even this giant thing that simulated a tornado.
We looked at a few more things in that spot and then moved on. The next place was all about cars, trains, and buildings.
There was a 3d mini city. It had all the buildings, trains, and mountains! There was a huge plane that hung from the ceiling, and it was one of the first passenger planes. There was also a fighter jet. My dad called us over and it was time to go to the U-505 Submarine Tour.
The Submarine
We walked down a hallway until we cam apon a wide open space with the huge submarine in the middle.
We walked down to the side, where our tour was waiting. We joined them, and we walked inside. It was extremely small, and defiantly cramped. There were 42 beds for 59 men, so they had to take turns sleeping.
The captain got a whole half room to himself, but even that was miniscual. She told us all the history of the U-boat. It was a German boat, and it patrolled for 4 years and sank 8 merchant ships. It was attacked by an American warship, and they dropped depth charges. It damaged the submarine, jamming the ruder.
The protocol for if you are unable to get away is sink with the ship, but the caption Kapitänleutnant Axel-Olaf Loewe, in order to save his men, ordered a emergency surface. All of the men were captured, and so was the boat. It contained secret information that Germany did not want the Americans to know, but since they captured the boat, now they knew.
I thought that the tour was great, but there was a whole other gallery of self reading. There was also a game where you were operating the submarine, which was cool. When we had finished, dad let us look around in the museum some more. Next we had to go the the Lego Exhibit.
The Lego Exhibit
There were actually two parts and you went in them one by one. It was a very cool place. Nathan Saway, the artist, made sculptures, paintings, and other things all out of Legos! I am a lover of legos, so I was in my happy place. I also love photography, and there were so many good opportunities. Here are some of the sculptures I took photos of.
