The American Revolution Museum is a great place to go if you want to learn about the American Revolution and slaves at that time. It is a very good museum with lots of good reading and facts about slavery and the revolution. Outside is a reenactment of what it would be like to live in the 1700s. There is the house for the family, a house for all of the cooking, and then the house for the slaves.
The Museum
The first thing that you do is a watch a movie about certain people who fought in the war. There is also this hallway with the timeline of the war, which was cool. After reading through most of the gallery, we went outside to see the houses and other things.
First place we went to was a American military camp, which had people dressed up as soldiers. We decided that we would come back to he camp after we looked around at the other things. We went over to the house where a normal peasant would live.
It was a pretty small house, but is was super cool inside. There was a loom where they would make cloth and other things, there was the parents bedroom, and the loft where the children would sleep. Odly, there was no kitchen.
After the main house was the house was the house with the kitchen, which was a whole separate place. There was some women in there who were dressed up in peasants clothing and were baking actually food over a burning fire. I thought that it was so cool that they actually did stiff as if it was the 1700s. After the kitchen was, of course, the garden.
What really surprised be was that a family of four would have an average of one acre of garden. I thought that was huge, but I guess when you are living off of that then you will need a lot.
Most people in that age had slaves to do normal chores around the house, so next we went to the slaves quarters. They were much smaller that the main house, with very little space to put things or really do anything. Also, their beds were basically a small blanket on wood.
There was also a little cellar in the floor to store goods. There was also a shed/house thing that had a bunch of tobacco leaves drying on the ceiling.
Is smelled super musty and bad. We left the spot with the houses and went back to the military camp. There were a bunch of little white tents for the soldiers, and they said that each tent held about six soldiers, which I thought was crazy. There was also a spot were they were shooting real guns that they would have used in the revolutionary war.
I ha d allot of fun looking around at all of the places at the Yorktown Revolutionary War Museum, and hope to visit again.
